Organization Overview

The Gainesboro Project is a multi-faceted initiative of the Wasioto
Restoration Company intended to revitalize this important town on the banks of the Cumberland River. Gainesboro serves as the county seat of Jackson County, Tennessee, located near the center of the storied Upper Cumberland region of Western Appalachia. The town was founded in 1819 at the confluence of the Roaring River and the Cumberland and was, as described in a 1928 newspaper account, “a little town nestling in the foothills of the Cumberland Mountains, formerly altogether out of the beaten paths of travel.…For many years it was the most important shipping point on the Cumberland river above Nashville, and was a trading center for a large territory.”

Before the advent of the Europeans into this countryside, “Wasioto” –
The Valley of the Deer – was the Shawnee Indian name for the Cumberland River. And in the heart of this hill and valley landscape – known locally as the Alps of the Cumberland – lies Gainesboro which is reinventing itself in the 21st century as a focal point of regional tourism and entertainment.

At the center of The Gainesboro Project, both literally and figuratively,
sits the Cordell Hotel whose full restoration and renovation are bringing new investment to a historic town square where traditional rhythms now blend with contemporary trends in hospitality and dining, as well as music and arts both traditional and modern.
